My Experience Studying Abroad: A Series

Stop 4: Munich, Germany

The outside of the church in Munich.

For one of the free days we had available, a group of us decided to take the train about an hour from Ingolstadt to Munich. When we got to Munich it was amazing. It was the biggest train station I have ever been in and there were food vendors and people bustling every which way. It was different than anything I had experienced up to this point on the trip. Once we were out of the train station we started walking and taking pictures of everything. There were tons of street performers. One guy was dressed as a tourist and was doing funny things like walking in the middle of people's photos intentionally or just messing with anyone who passed by. Another cool was a guy painted from head to toe in gold paint and he had a set up with water flowing and everything.

In that same square was a huge church that was in session when we first walked past, but then when we came back later was empty and we were able to explore a little bit. We were able to see the catacombs under the church and some of the amazing architecture. We were able to take an elevator to the top of the church and see a bird's eye view of the entire city.

In one of the restaurants we went to I was able to see a side to the German culture I had not seen up to this point. What you picture when you think of German clothes was exactly what we found. The men in lederhosen, and the women in busty dresses. I ended up ordering a plate of sauerkraut and sausages, and they sold some of my friends giant pretzels. A couple of them ended up getting the pretzels and I was able to try. In that restaurant there was also a group of musicians playing classic German music and while I was about to take of video of them playing one of the musicians had me take a photo of the group of them together. It was such a cool experience, and they were cool people.

After that, to relax we ended up going to the English gardens which were jaw-droppingly beautiful. There were trails everywhere, people selling gelato and other treats, and tons of people just lounging and enjoying the day and the great weather. It was s great way to relax after walking all over the city. We were able to finish out trip to Munich with the train ride back to Ingolstadt where we were staying.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
