A review of MGK's "Downfalls High" including the soundtrack, storyline, and my overall thoughts.
1. The soundtrack
The soundtrack was so good! I love the different variations of song topics. I think that this is his best work. The album that this movie's storyline is based on, "Tickets To My Downfall", Is definitely a unique composition of sound and styles. My favorite songs off the album include "play this when i'm gone", "lonely", and "my bloody valentine". They are so vulnerable and real with how life is and how he is dealing with his life experiences. He turns his struggles into art that other people with his struggles, or similar experiences, can relate to and understand.
2. The storyline
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It wasn't what I thought it would be, but it was a unique cluster of chaos. The story follows two kids in high school, a loner who rejects a boy and a popular pretty girl, and their love story. It had this forbidden love type of feel with a little more grungy angst. So basically if Tim Burton wrote Romeo and Juliet. I thought the mixture of real-life struggles and weird comic relief made you feel just the right amount of uncomfortable. The placement of the music throughout the film added the extra depth it needed to complete the experience.
3. Overall thoughts
I definitely recommend watching this film, especially if you're a Machine Gun Kelly fan. It was a really interesting take of teenage angst and I feel like it really showed who MGK is. It took a lot of different media elements and threw them together to create a unique experience for the viewer. You can tell that this was a passion project and it related directly back to the creators. I think this is definitely going to influence other musicians to intertwine visuals and music in a more in-depth way than just a music video.
