Every year, it’s the exact same scenario: Out with the passion teas and iced coffees and in with everyone’s favorite drink, the Pumpkin Spiced Latte. A famous concoction of spices, the feelings of fall, and an overwhelming aroma of pumpkin. This drink really takes us by storm. But, what happens if you’re not on that spectrum? What if you’re favorite fall time beverage isn’t Pumpkin Spiced, but instead Warm Apple Cider or even just Hot Coffee. Because personally, I fall into the other side of the PSL spectrum, and usually to the dismay of many. But here it is: I don’t see the big deal with Pumpkin Spiced Lattes.
Sure, the drink tastes good. But most Starbucks drinks do with enough syrups and sugars. And it is iconic for the fall and autumn time of year, especially with its name, but the Pumpkin Spice never stops with just the latte. All over there are cookies, cereals, breads, donuts, even gum and dog treats. This beverage themes every bit of consumable product possible, and yet it is just a drink. A drink themed after a seasonal gourd that has a usual amount of spices and sugar. And it is still everywhere. Even after the season, I often am finding Pumpkin Spice hiding in the Christmas Candy. I just get very confused, as to why this drink takes over.
But then I think, here I am, a person who less than favors the Pumpkin Spice Latte, and I am still writing an article about it. Even if these products I describe are mimicking the taste at best, and disgusting at worst, they would still have to have a market in order to be in stores. And as for coffee shops, and other places to serve the drink: they’re also following the smartest and safest business plan. People like Pumpkin Spice Latte and are excited when the season comes around. They will stand in line Early September for the debut, and will continue to consume until it is no longer offered into December. It wouldn’t be smart if Starbucks started serving a Salted Turnip Latte as an alternate because it wouldn’t be bought. People like the familiarity and the comfort, so they will consume.
Honestly, I used to be a PSL hater, but I see the appeal after really pondering the topic. As a drink, it is quite popular and somewhat annoying. But this is a drink that marks the coming of fall, when the leaves begin to change, temperatures finally drop and the world becomes a marvelous array of warm colors and tones. It means that Halloween is close by, and soon to be followed by the holidays. It’s a little cinnamon sprinkled magic that makes many especially excited about the moving of time, which can sometimes be scary and overwhelming. And I would honestly rather sip on some PSL than worry about the ticking of a clock. Besides, this drink just makes people happy. Simply said, and I’ll stop hating to that.
