Every Day, I Thank God For My Family

They are my whole heart.

Every Day, I Thank God For My Family
Shealee Zesch

I was blessed with a family that taught me everything I know today. They taught me how to be a good person, how to do for the right thing, how to know when to shut up, and how to know when to shout from the rooftops. All these things are not to be taken lightly. They have molded me into the person that I am, and they encourage me to constantly grow and stray from my old ways.

They also aren't afraid to call me on my bullshit. They let me know when my behavior is toxic and that I shouldn't continue that way. My dad refuses to let me be sad over stuff that I can't control, and my mom makes sure that I'm always pushing and striving for greatness. They refuse to let me settle. My brother always knows when to make me smile and when to sit back and let me cry. They are a constant in my life that always have my best interest at heart. I know that when I fall, they will be there to pick me back up.

I know that I'll always have my dad to watch coming of age movies with, my mom to gossip with, and my brother to take spontaneous trips to Steak n' Shake with. I'll always have friends as long as I have my family. The best thing is I don't have to worry with them. I will never have to be afraid that they will leave, that they don't love me (liking me is a completely different story sometimes,) and that I'll never be alone. I don't have to fight for their attention, and no matter how annoying and frustrating I may be, they know that they're stuck with me. I'm thankful that I was blessed with such a wonderful family that will always be by my side no matter what.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
