The Dream That Woke Me Up Sobbing

This morning I woke up with tears running down my face, now I have to analyze my dream.

I remember my dreams at least twice a week, but ever since quarantine started, I've had the most vivid dreams almost every night. As I struggled with writers block this week, I couldn't decide what I should write about. It wasn't until this morning that I woke up in tears, not able to console myself, frantically trying to comprehend the scene that had just played out in my head.

Here's my warning, the dream involves a shooting/ intruder like scenario.

So here's how the dream went, I'm on the dance team at my high school and we have to travel for football and basketball games. We were on our way to a basketball tournament in southern Arkansas, when we were stopped on the side of the road. We could hear two men screaming at us from outside of the bus. Our coach told us that we needed to get off the bus and find a house to hide in.

In my weird dream world, one of my best friends' house was on that street. She told me to run and follow her. We ran into her house and her parents and grandma brought her upstairs, I was stuck downstairs in a house I'd never been in before. I did my best to hide, but when I heard the two men right outside the house, I ran upstairs.

Except in that moment, my feet wouldn't move, I couldn't see anything, I was stuck on the stairs while the intruders were busting down the door. I managed to make it to a room where my friends entire family was hiding. They unlocked the door for me and we sat there up against the wall, waiting for someone to save us.

We didn't actually hide in the room, we just sat against a wall with some windows that had a view of the street. We could see police officers and firetrucks, but we had no way out. Then, the two men broke down the door to the room. They killed my friend and her family, they shot me twice and then walked out.

I was laying on the floor crying for help, there's a blank spot in my memory of the dream at this point and all of the sudden I was at the basketball tournament in my dance uniform. Everyone was acting like nothing happened. I was running around trying to get someone to listen to me and explain that I was hurt and that I needed help, and no one would listen.

For some reason my mom showed up and was yelling at me to go stand with the dance team, the game was starting. All I could do was sit there and look at her and ask her if she knew what happened. No one knew what happened.

The dream was absolutely terrifying and shook me to my core. I remember, when I was trying to get someones attention in the dream, I was sitting on my knees, screaming, hands shaking. I woke up so suddenly, sweaty, and crying. I couldn't stop the tears from flowing even after I realized it was a dream.

It threw me off for the rest of the day, and I was heart broken. I can't imagine how that would feel in real life, and it shatters me to think that so many people have actually gone through it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
