Sometimes life can seem overwhelming and it is in these times that we look for an escape. The other day, I was listening to my feel good playlist on shuffle and the song "Vienna" by Billy Joel came on. This song couldn't have played at a better moment. While listening to it, I started thinking about how much time I try to wish away to get to something new and exciting when really, I should be wishing for time to slow down because before we all know it, we will begin to wonder where all the time has gone.

Many of us, especially those of us that have been in college for awhile or those that have just entered the work force, are constantly plagued with the thought of our futures. Yes, I dream about being a big wig in my career someday with a fancy office in a beautiful high rise building living my best life, but these thoughts can diminish the moments we are in right now that we should really be enjoying.

Day in and day out we find ourselves stressed, worried or overthinking about what the future hold. Asking questions like "where will I go in life and what might I become?" Many of us are so focused on reaching the next stage in life, it can almost be consuming. We are in this constant state of wishing to be done with the semester, begging for summer to come back, saying things like "I can't wait to graduate college and get the heck out of (insert whatever so tired college town your're living in) and move on to experience bigger and better things!"

Doesn't this sound familiar? And I don't mean it sound familiar because you are thinking or have though these things yourself. No, I mean haven't we all been through this before? Think about it. Back when all of us were in high school reaching the end, we found ourselves ready to start new beginnings and "couldn't wait to get to college". Now we are here, or maybe you've already graduated and are thinking about what is next.

Despite it being two and a half months past new years and it seems a bit too late to make a News Years resolution, which I might have to agree with, but, it is never too late to make a new life resolution. As Billy Joel put is so well "you can't be everything you want to be before your time." So stop worrying so much about what might happen down the road from now. Instead, make it your new goal to allow yourself to experience all the things this chapter in your life has to offer, whatever that may be.

Learn to enjoy where you are and live this moment out as long as you can! Pull those all nighters talking to the person you like despite having an 8am the next day. Take the media class that doesn't pertain to your major at all just because it interests you. Cry when you are sad and laugh when you are happy. Most of all, remember to cherish this time, because you will only be here once and your future will always be there, just waiting for your time.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours.
