It's been a couple of weeks since Nike made controversial football player Colin Kaepernick the main spokesperson for Nike. Since then, it has gotten mixed reactions, while sales of Nikes have gone up, there are people not happy with the decision, who are going out of their way to destroy their own Nike products and publicly saying that they will not be buying Nike anymore. Some schools have even made the decision to not use Nike for their sports teams anymore.
In my personal opinion, destroying your Nikes is not only a waste of time but also a waste of money. Instead of destroying them, just give them away.
There are so many different homeless shelters in Illinois, especially in Chicago. that would be more than happy to have those shoes. Those people don't care they just want shoes or new clothes regardless of the brand, regardless of who is the spokesperson for it. If you have enough money to be able to afford Nikes, then you can buy yourself a new pair of shoes if you don't like what they have done, but put those clothes towards a good cause; don't let them go to waste.
You can also give them to your friend as a gift if you are looking for something to give them, and they need new shoes or just gear in general, then its perfect! Just make sure they aren't too worn when you give it to them.
You can also donate them to schools because so many children go without new clothes for who knows how long, and it would be awesome if we could help out the children who are the future and on their path to education. This would really help their confidence, and it would really make them smile.
So there are many different things that you can do with those Nikes besides burning or destroying them. If you actually want to make a difference with what is going on right now, then actually do so. Make your protest one that actually changes someone's life.
It is ok to protest, it is our right to do so, but don't destroy your stuff. Instead, make an impact on someone's life.
Just do it!
These are some fantastic resources to donate your shoes to in the Chicago area:
