Things have been eventful over the past few days, to say the least. With masses of people joining together for women's marches all over the nation to protest Trump's inauguration and misogynistic tendencies, many people were curious as to how Trump himself would react to the phenomenon. While he kept quiet on Saturday when the marches were in full force, he finally spoke up on Sunday morning with two contradictory and expectedly nonsensical tweets.
Take his first tweet on the issue:
Here, Trump seems to be shocked that anyone would be upset or protest given the amazing news (heavy sarcasm here) that he has been inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States. He then goes on to question why protestors "didn't vote." However, he fails to realize that maybe the large majority of protestors who were able to vote and did vote dealt with a number of factors (such as the electoral college and the fact that many other Americans bought into Trump's campaign) that allowed Trump to become president. Trump then says that "celebs hurt cause badly" which seems to imply that celebrities should not get involved in protesting or political causes. Considering that Trump himself was nothing but a celebrity who decided to run for president and get involved in politics only adds to the irony of his statements.
Next, Trump seems to go back on his statements about the ridiculousness of the protests and the people partaking in them:
Interestingly, two hours after tweeting his first tweet (or not so interestingly when you consider that Trump was probably told not to be so one-sided), he goes back on his word by explaining that peaceful protests are a sign of the democracy we live in and that he recognizes people's rights to express themselves. While this may seem like a positive statement, it's pretty contradictory of his previous admonishing statements and only exemplifies his confusion.
If anything, his tweets on this issue along with his unusual behavior allow for us to expect even more contradictions from Trump throughout his time in office, which is sure to make the next few years as confusing as it was to find out that someone like him was actually elected as president.
