There’s this cliched idea about how fiction is putting a mirror up to reality. As human stubbornness can lead to a close minded individual, art tries it’s best to make us empathize. There are many ways to teach others to be better people and the idea of a “villain” is always a great way to make us realize that negative behaviors associated with that person are things I need to stay away from. Movies can be an escape for most, and within them, there are people that might not empathize very well. That is, until Disney figures out a way to somehow reignite the flame fueling your tear glands, thus causing a stream of emotion to tickle your cheek as it streams down. If Trump finds Simba crying over his father’s dead carcass ‘sad’, then there might just be some humanity left on Earth. I said if. I have no proof this actually happened.
Getting lost in a piece of art that is making criticisms about something can be easier than just telling someone they are doing something wrong. It seems like that might not be possible because how would a stage set with costumes and script help influence people more than a simple conversation? Well, I think it is because when we get lost in art, we are more open to accepting talking animals and different ideas. Subconsciously, there is something going on. We are more inclined to absorb values that can be later used in real life.
There is just too much happening is popular nerd culture, that is starting to do more than entertain us. It is just a shame to see amazing different perspectives that are in their own way paving a future that wasn’t there before. This can be cool to analyze, but the scarier the implications of what we are looking at starts to sink in. I start to wish for crazy things like have Trump watch some anime.
"Attack on Titan" is a popular anime, so popular in fact that anime enthusiasts hate the mainstream nature of its existence. This is understandable because some say with full confidence that "'Attack on Titan' is the best anime". Imagine how frustrating it is for the actual anime viewers with a subscription to Crunchyroll, who spend hours of their lives watching multiple animes, that know the actual best animes to hear a reception like that.
This is all I know, "Attack on Titan" may be on one of the best shows in general. The metaphors from this show can be applied to our current political climate in so many ways. For those not fully versed in the show, there are these human-like giants called Titans that eat humans and have pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. With only walls as protection, there are soldiers that bravely fight for the understanding and exploration of these monsters.
The Titans represent the threat to humanity. Although humanity today only has climate change to fear as a whole, we are too busy worrying about the politics. If only we could be thankful that there aren’t giant monsters eating us. The series also shows us that the fear of what we don’t know can overshadow any form of reason. I don’t want to spoil too much of the show, but there is a definite parallel between how the Titans are treated and the way immigrants are being treated by today’s administration.
There are many other works like "Game of Thrones" that can also share some semblance of making a metaphor for humanity, so check that out too! I really believe in art because it has predicted things like this before. Look at books like "1984" or movies like "Network". The past reveals the future all around us.
