Donald Trump defies all logic. America blinked, and out of nowhere one of America's most recognizable business and TV personalities became a front runner in the race for the republican presidential nomination. In reality, he shouldn't even be close, but America loves an underdog.
To be fair, we have to realize that Trump isn't the conventional underdog. His story doesn't invoke the triumph of Hoosiers, Rocky, Rudy, or the miracle at Lake Placid. Trump's allure is much more complicated than that. Simply put, Trump is just an asshole. In a political system that caters to the fake and politically correct, one man has decided to say exactly what he is thinking, regardless of the repercussions. I don't agree with Trump's politics, but it is easy to see the appeal.
If the Republican nomination is like dating, Trump is the person that treats you terribly, says offensive things to you and uses you constantly, yet for some reason you still really want them. Meanwhile, there is a pack of compulsive nice-guy cuddlers just waiting to spoon you for hours on end. Would you like Lindsey Graham? How about Jeb Bush? Or Ted Cruz? Trust me, they all spoon the same.
As a libertarian I'm not sure who I'm going to vote for yet. There is a buffet of mediocrity this election, with a few dashes of crazy, and a few sprinkles of uncertainty. But I can honestly say that, although he might not add a lot to the political conversation, Donald Trump sure makes talking about the deficit a little more entertaining.
