Throughout much of Donald Trump's campaign for presidency, he burned many bridges with many different communities around the country. For example, President-Elect Trump had many derogatory remarks and actions towards Muslims, Latinos, Women and many other groups, but when he won the election against Hillary Clinton, he soon realized that he could not have an effective presidency without a unified country. Thus, when he won presidency he first described the goals of his presidency that he felt everyone could get behind to try and make it seem like he wasn't the bigot he was during the entire election. For example, he described the entire country unifying against the control of big corporation, corruption in the government, while also trying to help the middle and working class. However, anyone who hadn't supported Trump through the election should hope for a prosperous America, but they shouldn't allow Donald Trump to re-brand himself.
Donald Trump's tactic to appeal to just one specific group throughout the election while alienating almost every other group obviously was successful, but while empowering certain groups, it left others hapless. Now any attempt for Trump to reach out to reconnect with these communities should be met with at least some skepticism. For example, Donald Trump's comments about the Khan family and their son's service in the military, or comments describing Mexican-Americans, specifically undocumented immigrants, as rapists who bring crime and drugs. Furthermore, Trump alienated women with his derogatory comments towards women, such as Rosie O'Donnell and Megyn Kelly as well as the disabled community with his actions mocking a disabled reporter. Even the recent possibilities for members in Trump's cabinet are a group of extremely conservative Republicans who bought into his ideologies, which emphasizes that he hasn't really changed his views.
Perhaps Trump only used the rhetoric he did to appeal to a certain group of voters who he wants to retain popular with while now trying to appeal to the entire country. Regardless of the reason, Trump has a laundry list of people he has pushed away from himself, and all of these acts cannot suddenly be forgotten simply because he won the election. Trump should be reminded of the path that he took to reach his presidency, and although we should still hope that America can become prosperous, we cannot let that haze prevent us from remember the bigot that Donald Trump was when he ran for and won presidency.
