Crossfit?

It's not as bad as you think

Crossfit?

When my friend first brought up the idea of crossfit, I was terrified. I had perviously mentioned to her that I wanted to get fit and be more healthy. With her being an athletic friend and on crew and track, she wanted me to run with her. Once that plan failed (we never went), she told me she was signing up for crossfit. Reluctantly, I did it and I am so glad I did.

I walked in, and my friend wasn't there. I told the lady there that I was here for the free trial, and she made me warm up while the man who ran it came. I had to bike a mile and then we started. Once I finished, my friend was there and we got started.

The coach started us with a barbell, the long weight one. It was only 15lbs, and he made sure to tell us no matter how experienced people are, he makes them start with the 15lb bar. We learned how to do "dead-lifts" which is just lifting the bar from the floor to our hips. We had to learn the correct form and posture, and then we went to a move where we brought the weight up to our collar bones. We had to "chicken wing" our elbows, and that's when I found out my arms were not flexible....at all. After that, we pulled the weight over our head and held it then brought it down. We did 12 dead lifts, 9 of the other one, and 6 of the ones above our heads. After 3 times of holding the weight above my head, I realized I needed to get stronger haha. We did these reps three times, taking a break and letting the person go after one rep to relax.

After the weights, we had to burn 20 calories on this air bike. Thinking of burning just 20 calories seems easy, but it was so hard. Theres was resistance and we had to make it to ONLY 20 calories, but after 7 my legs already hurt. However, I went on because I know it is good for me.

After this, it was already over! I was scared, but it was so fun. I was told by my friend it is addicting, and it is. I couldn't stop talking about how much fun it was. I even got my dad to think about doing it over winter break!

It was so much fun, and I felt so completed afterwards. I was burning calories even after I stopped working because of the muscles I worked. I was so much fun and I hope to do it twice a week now and get healthier!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
