Why A Dog's Love Is the Best Kind of Love...
Elizabeth Miller

In the midst of this time of change happening to our great nation and our Facebook news feeds being flooded with negativity I thought I would bring some happiness to your news feed. That is why I am going to touch on why a dog's love is the best love…

Disclaimer: I am OBSESSED with my dogs. At times, I talk to my dogs in a more compassionate way than my boyfriend… but hey isn't that ‘why a dog's love is the best love?...

1. You’re never alone

I have four dogs that live at my parents: Auggie (an old grumpy English bulldog), Diesel (my sweet little mini Aussie baby), Bella (a huge Neapolitan mastiff), and Scout (a little beagle that adopted us, as opposed to us adopting him, this summer). Some of you might be thinking right now that four is a little much, and I will not deny that. With four bundles of love following you around everywhere like you’re the grand marshal at the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade makes you feel like you’re never alone. Even when you really want to be alone, like when taking a shower.

2.You’ll more than likely never be cold

In the Miller household, dogs are just one of us. I joke that since I’ve gone off to college, my little brother Johnathon is now the favorite kid, but then I go home and realize that both Johnathon and I have been replaced by none other than the dogs. Our dogs run the house and are allowed to go wherever, including the living room furniture and our beds. You can almost guarantee that you won't be able to sit on the couch more than two seconds without a little fuzzy buddy joining you.

3. You will have a hard time not smiling when they're around

My dogs do the most entertaining things sometimes and you just cannot help but laugh. The thing that gets me the most is how much they act like people. Bella does not realize she is a year old and weighs over 100 pounds, so she will sit on you like shes a lapdog. Now, Diesel is just full of personality and has so much sass that he puts my sassiness to shame- I've clearly taught him well!

4. You always know when someone is coming down the driveway, coming down the road, or even coming into town

This might sound like a bad thing, and when you’re trying to concentrate, it is; however, you always know you’ll be protected. The moment someone even steps on the front porch, we have four dogs ready to protect us within seconds. There is nothing better than a posse full of friends that have your back!

5. You always know you’re loved

Even though they eat your shoes, your favorite purse, or wake you up at three in the morning because they got sick, you always know they love you. Dogs show this so much better than humans could even try by wagging their tails (or if they don't have a tail, they shake their butts), running up to you the morning you walk in the door, or my personal favorite: when they come up to you when they know you're sad and just sit with you until you’re all better.

At the end of the day it's easy to see that a dog will for ever and always be ‘a man's best friend.’

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
