We have our people friends. Our school friends. Our family friends. Our boyfriends. Our girlfriends. But most importantly; our pups.
There is no friend quite like a dog. They wake you up in the morning ready to love you unconditionally and continue to remind you all day how cool you are. You can forget to let them out or not take them on a walk and they don't mind. You can be gone all day and they will patiently wait for you to get home. A dog is so happy to see you that they run and jump and lick your face just say hello. Not only are you their best friend, you are their whole world. Maybe they just like you because you feed them every morning and night but I like to think that the bond is much stronger than that.
You provide them with a caring, loving life and in return, you can count on them to be there everyday. To watch movies or an entire netflix series with you and 'share' a whole pizza. They are the best exercise partners and are even better cuddle buddies. They will hear your pro and cons list. They may not be able to give you advice in return but they will be the best listeners. They make you laugh with their goofiness and will always grant you with a story to share. They allow you to dress them up, put booties on them and are good sports about it (sometimes). Whether they tear up your homework or pee in their crate, we, as people, always seem to let it slide.
Dogs grow up with you. They move with you. They are there for a good ten years of your life (depending on the dog). Through the ups and downs and all of the twists and turns, they will never leave your side. They roll with you as life throws you punches and may even help you dodge a few.
You grow to love them almost as much as they love you.
And before you know it, they go to doggie heaven. So you have to appreciate the time you have with them why you have it. Laugh when they tear up your flower bed or when they eat your shoe. Walk them even when you are tired and play one more game of tug-a-war because it will make their day. Give them some treats or order them their very own doggie ice cream cone. They don't get as much life as you, so be sure to make the most of it.
And when it is their time to go, know you gave them the best life they could dream of having. Know that it is okay to be sad because you just lost your bestfriend. Know that you might get a new dog but it won't replace your past dog. It just allows you to fall in love another time and make new memories with this new puppie that you welcomed into your home.
