Being alone generally isn't high on anyone's priority list. For those of us who are living on our own, or with willing parents, and tend to balk at real human interaction there are a few ways to make a friend. This potential companion would definitely have a mind of their own, opinions distinct from yours, and a complete lack of judgment against you. The friend mentioned above would of course be a dog. They come in many shapes and sizes, each with their own unique disposition. They aren't the right companion for everyone, but there are multiple reasons for letting one into your life.
One aspect of getting a canine companion that most seem to forget can be a benefit for both yourself and the dog. From a tiny Chihuahua to a lumbering Great Dane, every dog needs exercise. This can benefit pet parents in several ways. A larger animal would require a more rigorous workout. Taking the dog for a walk is a great way to get out of the house for you as well. For dogs of any size, frisbees, tennis balls, and various chew toys can be your best friends. Nothing really compares to a good walk or a strenuous tug-of-war session (with the right dog, it is entirely possible you will be lying on the floor and panting just as hard as they are with the rope between you).
The simple act of being there is another reason a dog could make a good companion. Being able to walk into your space knowing that there is someone there that is absolutely delighted to see you for no other reason than they love you and miss you is one of the best feelings. They can't speak, but a happy bark, wagging tale, and bright eyes can say more than any fully formed sentence. They can also provide a sense of security. Most dogs don't appreciate unknown people entering their space, thus they tend to kick up a fuss. They can also prove to be a great icebreaker if you are walking about the neighborhood and don't really know anyone yet. Still, it is important to use caution when someone asks to pet your dog. If your pet seems weary of that stranger then it's often a good sign for you to steer clear as well.
For those of us who find it difficult talking to new people and trying to make friends, a dog (or any animal companion) can be a great comfort. Be it looking for a companion to simply cuddle with on stormy days, or a running mate in the early morning hours, the right dog can always become your four-legged best friend. For those with allergies, there are even some dogs out there that shed less and produce less dander. Dogs make for great company, just make sure everyone in the house thinks so too.
