Kanye West had been a known fan of President Trump during the 2016 election cycle, but his support garnered very little liberal blowback. Fast forward two years into Trump's presidency and Kanye decides to reaffirm his adoration for Donald Trump as well as other conservative thinkers like Candace Owens on Twitter.
Unlike his previous acknowledgment of his support of President Trump, this response was tremendous attracting attention from both sides with conservatives such as Trump stating it was one of the key moments for African Americans while those on the left reacted in their routine fashion. Many on Twitter attacked Kanye saying he had gone to the 'sunken place' or was just another Uncle Tom.
Chance the Rapper backed up Kanye with a tweet saying, "Black people don't have to be Democrats." Although Chance made it clear in later tweets that this was not a comment in support of President Trump, this does raise an important question. Are black people expected to be Democrats?
The short answer is yes, they are. This can be clearly demonstrated by the left's reaction to Kanye's comments. He was immediately placed in the 'sunken place' making reference to the recent film 'Get Out' wherein black people are brainwashed by white people.
This is exactly what the far left want black people to see the Republican Party as. That aligning yourself with conservatives is to infect yourself with the parasitic mindbug that is 'Whiteness'. How spooky.
While Kanye West and Chance the Rapper may not be articulating political points like you would hear politicians or commentators, they are actually challenging the hegemonic ideals of the the far left that says that all minorities are under their protection as they are too far cast out of society and therefore they know what is best for them.
This ideology is not necessarily bad on its own as we need individuals who are willing to stand up for minorities, but the danger signs come from the reaction to one of their own leaving the fold. Even other celebrities like John Legend texted Kanye urging him to go back on his statements.
While there is no shortage of opposition to minorities becoming conservatives, what Kanye and Chance have said should not be taken lightly. They are perhaps inadvertently speaking on behalf of free thought. Challenging the notion that all minorities must be a part of the Democratic Party or they have somehow allowed themselves to be infected. Their words push a counter-narrative of exploring and challenging your preconceived notions of the world.
This does not mean that in doing so you will magically become a conservative, rather you will give yourself a chance to scrutinize your views. To take another look at a narrative that says your skin color determines your political allegiance. And as the great philosopher Plato said, "An unexamined life is not worth living". Examine your beliefs and see what path is truly for you regardless of race, sex, orientation, etc.
