Recently, there was a study published in the Psychology of Violence that revealed having your drink drugged on college campuses is more common than we think. This survey asked about 6,000 students from University of South Carolina, the University of Kentucky and the University of Cincinnati. Of these 6,00 students, 8 percent said they thought they had been drugged at a party and 1 percent said they has actually been the ones to drug someone else's drink.
In most cases, people slipped drugs into someone drinks with the intention of a sexual assault, others just thought it was a better way to make the person they are drugging have more fun. (Note: You do not need to drink or do drugs to have fun.) Women more more commonly drugged than men were throughout this study as well.
The one issue with this study is people do not actually know if they got slipped a drug. It may be hard to tell if you were drugged or if you have just consumed alcoholic beverages. This is just something you should always keep in the back of your mind for caution. Some signs of consuming a doctored drink are feeling tired, nauseas, hot, sexually aroused, and have flushed cheeks.
In college it is easy to see the good in people. You just want to have fun and sometimes that leads to not having a care in the world. Having your drink spiked is extremely dangerous, not to mention can lead to many scary consequences. Any drink can be spiked even if you are not drinking alcohol so it is important to always pay a close attention to what your drinking, and who is around. There is no need to go to the bar or party in fear after reading this, but it is important to be aware that these things do happen to people.
Some tips to avoid a situation like this:
- Go out in large numbers of friends.
- Never put your drink down and lose sight of it.
- Cover the top with your hands when holding it so you do not have to watch over it like a hawk. What is the fun in that??
- Only accept drinks from the bar.
- Try to avoid sharing drinks with people.
- Have fun but just be cautious!
