Orlando was one of many cities where there was a special screening held for fans and other people curious about the movie "Doctor Strange." Walking in, I was expecting your typical Marvel preview some clips thrown in and maybe some special effects. What I got was something entirely authentic to Jack Kirby's vision for Dr. strange. The special effects were far from typical in comparison to other Marvel movies as well as the general setting.
First, is the fateful crash where Strange's car is warped into a crumpled mess. Second, what is shown is a desperate Strange looking for a cure for his hands. This leads into a monastery where he is going to train in the mystical arts.
Witty banter between Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One tells me this film will have its fair share of comedy as well. What follows is a sizzle reel of all the special effects assets in the film. This is the most fascinating part of Doctor Strange as it's unafraid to be mystical or otherworldly. This is no ordinary Marvel movie, it is the start of a whole new branch of the Marvel universe.
We have seen Earth with "The Avengers" and other heroes such as the "Guardians of the Galaxy" in space. Now we have the mystical realm and all of the creatures and environments that come with that through Doctor Strange. It leaves prospects exciting for the future in Marvel because there's so many directions they can go to combine these things.
Cumberbatch portrays a cocky then humbled Doctor Strange and he sells the role very well. Rachel McAdams plays Christine Palmer, a nurse who has befriended Strange somehow despite his cockiness. What follows is a car crash and then Strange's search for a cure for his hands which he needs as a surgeon.
Benedict Wong portrays Wong, Strange's partner in the comics and Chiwatel Ejiofor portrays Mordo. We get a wide array of special effects that, combined with the fantastic soundtrack, makes Doctor Strange out to be quite an experience. We get a few brief glimpses of the possible fights in the movie and they look entirely different from anything we've seen in Marvel movies before.
This is a good thing as I love to see Iron Man flying through the air and launching missiles and Captain America throwing his shield. Every once in a while, though, you want something different. Doctor Strange seems to be offering just that and I can't wait to see what else it has in store come November 4.
