There are few ways in which I judge a movie. The list goes on a little like this: humor, the usage of CGI animation, acting and plot.
Going into the plot of this movie, the basic story is that it follows Stephen Strange, a narcissistic, genius surgeon. In an accident, he loses the use of his hands and tries to regain the use of them so he can operate again. Since Western medicine fails him, he heads east where he finds a new type of ability where he’s able to use his hands again. His teacher is the Sorcerer Supreme, played by Tilda Swinton.
Next, we move into the humor. While this movie isn’t the comedic humor of movies like Deadpool or Guardians of the Galaxy, there are certain parts of this movie that are very comedic. They are pretty sparse, but funny indeed.
The CGI animation on this movie was phenomenal. This movie is so trippy, it’s almost like watching Inception. It’s so well done and truthfully, I haven’t seen CGI this good since Avatar.
Lastly, I thought the acting was between subpar and great. There are a few actors who had decent acting and others who were great. Benjamin Pratt was an okay actor, as was Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Stephen Strange’s doctor rival (sort of). Rachel McAdams was an okay actress in this movie, but only because her character was so two dimensional. Benedict Cumberbatch really encompassed Stephen Strange and Tilda Swinton had a good role in this movie.
Giving a rating to this movie is fairly easy because it was easily an 8 out of 10 for me. I really recommend it.
