Apple has been aggressive pushing its Apple Watch in the market since its launch. It has been placing its watch on the wrists of A-list celebrities such as Beyonce, Pharrell Williams and Katy Perry in a move aimed at making the device more desirable as a fashion accessory. In the Android spectrum also, many companies are launching smartwatches which can easily be synced with your Android Smartphone and to some extent, even your iPhone.
But do smartwatches really need to exist as of today? Looking at my messages, answering calls, controlling my music and everything in between can be done by simply using my phone. But there's simple, old-fashioned geeky joy to eliminating those small, seemingly inefficient steps. Not having to reach for my phone to glance at a message and instead, simply turning my wrist over to read the latest message that my mother has sent me or answer the call simply by flicking my wrist has come to be an absolutely unnecessary but blissful experience for a tech geek’s everyday life.
Since the time smartwatches have started to enter the mainstream, people have often been asked what watch that they are wearing, simply because the idea of a light-up LCD display on a wrist is yet novel and uncommon. Smartwatches are catching up fast with a well-crafted traditional watch with premium metal builds, finely designed analog dials, and the use of leather straps. Becoming an eye-catcher simply by virtue of its backlit Displays and the ability to do so much more from your wrist itself, smartwatches seem to slowly be gaining popularity. And while a traditional watch looks the same day in and day out, a smartwatch can have its face changed to whatever you fancy.
Personally, as an owner of the Apple Watch Sports Series 1 who wears the watch every day and night except when charging, I’ve learned after months of use all there is know about smartwatches while using the industry’s standard. Honestly, the Apple Watch is not something people need in their lives. While having many useful features, it remains highly impractical due to its cost and the lack of functionally when used independently of the paired smartphone. Although considering their price and build quality, they could simply be compared to a mid-level luxury watch, the final verdict I reached is that smartwatches are yet to be a necessity.
