Brock Turner was convicted of three counts of sexual assault and only served a three month long sentence. So one way to view this, is that he served only one month for every felony he was convicted of. His defense brought up how young he was (nineteen at the time of the assault), his seemingly clear record, and of course, the fact that he could swim well. I personally believe, at the age of nineteen (my current age), that someone would know you should not rape, violate, or hurt another human being.
I'm sure that his age was used to show how much life to "potential" he has left, but to me, if you destroy someone else's life, yours should be destroyed as well. Moving on to his clear record, just because he had a decent record with the police, doesn't mean he has done something like this in his past and it just was not reported. Let's take a minute now to talk about one's ability to swim well and how that should matter in a rape case... oh that's right, it doesn't at all.
It has been seen time and time again that being an athlete has swayed jurors or judges to give athletes lighter sentences. CNN reported fifty-two cases "investigated by police" for "sexual violence" involving NCAA athletes in the last twenty years and investigated them. Of the fifty-two, eleven cases resulted in no time spent through probation or "suspended " or "deferred" sentences. Nine cases were completely dropped all together or acquitted. The judge that ruled on Turner's case can appartnely no longer rule in any criminal cases due to his noticeable bias (please see link below). This is not okay. This needs to change. No matter who you are, justice should not invade you.

But enough about the man who doesn't deserve anymore talk about him. If you are a victim of sexual violence, in any form, please seek the help that you need. There are resources out there to report crimes or receive treatment. At the end of this article, I will include resources and groups that can help. If your abuser is in a position of power, or is an athlete, such as Turner, please do not let this stop you from seeking the resources you deserve.
