As incoming freshmen of High Point University settle into their new home, they become inundated with choices. They have to choose who to hang out with, where to sit in class, what time to wake up and even what to eat.
The term "Freshman 15" refers to the amount of weight that is gained over the course of the first year of college. However, this weight gain is entirely self-determined. Freshmen do have to choose what to eat day in and day out, but imbedded in this choice is the decision between healthy eating or non-healthy eating. On the campus of High Point University, there are more than 10 dining locations on campus and more than 45 off-campus partners in dining. With nearly 70 locations to choose from, healthy options are there. The choice is yours.
Not only do we have to choose what to eat, but we also have to choose to be active. Getting out of bed in the mornings is the first step to an active routine. Maintaining an active routine will help eliminate the feared "Freshman 15." At High Point, you have access to several gyms, as well as workout classes. There is even a dietician willing to talk with you about your health, and there is always the option to play club sports. Even if you are not a division-level athlete, there is always room for you on the club or intramural teams. Not only do these activities keep you active, but you gain friendships along the way.
I may only be a freshman, but I highly believe that the "Freshman 15" is not to be feared. Only you can put fact or myth to this stereotype. You choose what to eat and how to keep active. If you notice a gain beginning to happen, then choose to take advantage of what campus has to offer for healthy habits.College is the place for you to branch out and make your own decisions. Parents are no longer right above you to influence your choices. I say this for my fellow freshmen and for other students worrying about what to expect when entering college. Make the most of your experience and make healthy decisions.
