Do Not Be Afraid Of The Next Big Step

A letter to college students, especially graduating students

Do Not Be Afraid Of The Next Big Step
Chike Okwudiafor

Graduations are full of joy, happiness, and fulfillment. Graduations can also be filled with worry, doubt, and fear of the future. As I sat during the graduation ceremony at Lee University, I saw people being released into the work force, not all having jobs, not all having a plan for the future, not all being confident. I saw and met people who said they were a bit scared and afraid for the future; some were scared of taking this next big step.

People are always scared to move on to the next level of life as they get scared of the unknown. They don’t know whether they are ready for the next phase of life. This is where the trust in God comes into place. As Hillsong said in their song "Oceans":

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior.”

This verse of the song just summarizes everything. If you commit everything to God, the Spirit of the Lord would lead you; it will take you to places you would never have imagined. God would take you places that will challenge you to be somebody greater in life. In my life, I have always been afraid of that next big step, but recently I said I would take that big step not knowing where I would end, but I took that step because of the trust I have in God. I know that God would never fail me. This big step is very tough, but I have to keep moving forward and overcoming every obstacle in this phase of my life. I am a photographer, and I feel like God wants me to impact others through this medium. God wants me to express my creative part of mind to the fullness. He wants me to put smiles on people’s faces and call more people to Him. I have felt like giving up so many times, but I always remember to trust God and continue through the struggle. I know one day I would be successful and I would impact the lives of other people.

To those who have graduated and are unsure of their future, and to those who are still in college and are afraid of their future, I say to you today as the words of Isiah 41:10 say: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” God is with you and he would not leave you. So take that big step, try new things, explore all opportunities and trust God. He would take you to places you don’t imagine.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
