Do I Need This?

If you haven't used it in the past year, you probably don't need it.

Do I Need This?

With September just a few days away, the time has come to return to college for the 2016 -2017 school year. The next few days will be filled with gathering stuff together and packing. Dorm rooms, however, are not known for having vast quantities of space so you can't possibly bring everything. It's one thing to have a comfortably full side of the room and another entirely to have so much stuff that you need multiple cars to bring it all and give anyone who enters a small feeling of claustrophobia.

I find, as I go through my belongings and start packing, that a good way to determine whether or not I need something is to think about the last time I used it. If I know I brought it with me last year and never once picked it up (except to move it out of the way for something else) then it doesn't need to come back this year. Same goes for things I only used once or twice. For example, every year I bring my horseback riding equipment. I rode frequently for my first semester of freshman year but since then I think I've only ridden once. Therefore is it really practical to bring it all back this year? I think not.

This is not to suggest bringing the minimum amount of stuff. You want to be comfortable in your dorm room and use the little bit of space that is yours to show a bit of who you are. If you know you'll wear all the clothes you bring and need all of the other items you're bringing don't let anyone tell you you're bringing too much stuff. But, if you think back to last year and thought you had way too much stuff, then maybe it's time to dial back a bit and think about how much you used something in the past and whether or not it really needs to come back this time.

April Ludgate

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

Amidst my hectic college career, I always find time for one thing, even on the busiest weeks: Parks and Recreation. This show has made me laugh and has made me cry, but most of all I have related to this show more than I would like to admit.

Here are some "Parks and Rec" moments that relate to life struggles that just about everyone faces.

April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation is notorious for her "I don't care" attitude. She speaks her mind without caring what anyone thinks of her. Fans love her because she isn't afraid to be herself. April can seem cold and negative, but she's really just fearless and strong-minded. And despite her sometimes harsh words, April truly cares about the people she's closest to. These are all reasons she is the epitome of a college student.
