Do It Anyways

When things get tough...

Do It Anyways
Elizabeth Marcyoniak

Life isn't always great. I know it sounds so negative, but I prefer to think of it as realistic. Everyday we are faced with tasks, some that we willingly take on and others we would rather avoid. Even when tasks seem incredibly daunting, boring, or not worth doing we do them anyways with a little bit of extra perseverance.

For many people it can be a struggle getting out of bed in the morning. When the alarm goes off it is so tempting to just press snooze and continue to lay in the comfort of your bed, but eventually you get up and on with your day.

Every day we are faced with small tasks- going to the dentist, calling the doctor, eating your vegetables, or trying to hold a polite conversation with that super annoying classmate. There are tests we would rather not take, essays we would rather not write, and chapters of textbooks that we would rather not read (or pay for).

These small tasks help build up our perseverance and character. They help set you up to conquer the more difficult things in life, like presentations for class or work, difficult coworkers, and other situations that we would rather not encounter.

At the time these difficult situations seem like mountains that you will never be able to get over. They may seem like a dark rain cloud hanging over you at the beach, that never seems to go away. Eventually, with a little bit of grit, hard work, determination, perseverance, and maybe a few tears you will get over the mountain. The dark cloud will pass and the sun will shine down on you. It will warm your face and you will feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off your shoulders. You will feel a sense of relief and accomplishment knowing you have conquered something so difficult.

Things might not work out perfectly. There may be more roadblocks than you expect. You may get stuck in the mud along the way, but it is important to remember to never stop moving forward. Even if it seems like the tiniest step forward, you are getting yourself that much closer to your goal.

In the past there has been so many times where I did seize opportunities because I thought there would be too much in my way and things would be too difficult. I was scared and afraid of failure. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to handle the demands of the situation or task at hand, so instead of even trying I would just give up. I missed out on things because I was too afraid to try, and that was probably the biggest mistake I could have made. Things in life aren't always going to be perfect. Things will be messy, challenging, frustrating, and difficult. At times you will be confused, scared, and frustrated but these emotions cannot get the best of you. These emotions cannot limit what you get out of your one and only life. No matter how scary or difficult the task may seem- challenge yourself. You will never know what you are capable of until you do.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
