DNC Highlights Day 1

False and misleading claims, speeches, and attacks of the other party, Oh my!

DNC Highlights Day 1

Yesterday was the first day of the Democratic National Convention. It is turning out to be just as bad, if not worse than the Republican Convention last week. With just the first night under wraps, it is too soon for me to have my entire opinion out on the whole week.

Video from PBS.

The speakers included: Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Astrid Silva, and others. Michelle Obama gave a speech talking about how great America is. She basically said to not listen to Trump because America always has been and always will be great. Her speech was very eloquently delivered. It spoke of the children of the country, playing to the mothers in the audience. She's a good speaker, but other than that it was average.

Senator Bob Casey said Trump would "cut taxes for the richest Americans at the expense of the middle class." However all income levels would get some tax relief under Trump's plan.

Video from CBS.

Elizabeth Warren had very in your face remarks about Donald as well. There was no question that she didn't like the guy. "Trump’s entire campaign is just one more late-night Trump infomercial. Hand over your money, your jobs, your children’s future, and The Great Trump Hot Air Machine will reveal all the answers,” she said. “And, for one low, low price, he’ll even throw in a goofy hat.”

Rep. Joe Kennedy III stated that American's wages "have not budged in 40 years," and Warren said that wages were "flat." This is also false. Wages plunged in the 70s and 80s, more recently they have shown growth. (Factcheck.org)

Video from PBS.

Bernie tried his hardest to unite the Democratic party, even though all the email scandals happened prior to the convention. His supporters seemed very upset, some even in tears. They booed as he kept his endorsement of Clinton.

In his speech, Sanders stated the "top one-tenth of 1 percent now owns almost almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent," this statistic has been questioned by economists at the Federal Reserve Board (according to factcheck.org.) Sanders also stated that the top 1 percent in recent years has earned 85 percent of all new income, but economist who's work Sanders has cited put the figure at 52 percent for 1993 to 2015 according to factcheck.org.

Sanders said that Clinton would "guarantee" free tuition at public colleges or universities for families with annual incomes of $125,000 or less. But that free tuition is not guaranteed, states must put up matching funds for the students to receive "free" tuition.

Republicans are upset because there was absolutely no talk of terrorism or the threats of ISIS mentioned in the Convention. Democrats however were appalled that the Republicans don't take climate change more seriously.

This thing is still far from over, folks.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
