For the longest time, I wondered where my ancestors were from. I am a Mexican American so I had a general idea. For Latinos, it is a lot harder because of the lack of records. I finally plucked up the courage and bought a DNA test.
A few weeks ago I purchased a DNA test kit from 23andme. Over the weekend I received my results. It was nothing life shattering and I feel a little disappointed. To be honest I expected more from this product. The results were pretty vague. For example, I was placed in three different groups broadly, southern European, and South Asian.
What does this even mean? 23andme groups large areas together and designates the participant. 23andme offers 31 reference populations. One of the areas I was given was the Iberian peninsula. The majority of my DNA comes from this reference population. This generally includes Spain and Portugal.
My biggest surprise was that my family was British Irish. I also got Italian, Jewish and a small percentage of African American. However, there wasn't any as surprises with my Native American designation.
A cool feature is "DNA Relatives" the people at 23andme are able to find people from around the world that share your DNA. I had over 1,000 DNA relatives. Some who share as much as 10 percent of my DNA. If participants want to go further they can opt for a meeting.
There are reports out there of people using multiple tests from different companies. Many have received totally different results. I suggest using a well-known brand. It will provide accuracy. This test gave me a general idea, but it looks like I will have to do my own research if I want to learn more.
At least I have a starting point. I am definitely Mexican. I would recommend for people to buy this product if they are looking for a general idea.
