Back to school means moving into dorms. Whether you’re a freshman or a returning student, there is always a need to make your dorm feel more like home. However, you’re a broke college student and you have limited funds to decorate your new space. Here are some ways you can upcycle some items around your house to transform your white box room into a cozy corner.

1. Incorporate shirts or loose fabric from home into your dorm with embroidery hoops/rings.

Embroidery hoops are relatively cheap. A 10-inch hoop at JoAnne’s is $3.99 online, and the smaller hoops are cheaper. You can get the look above for less than ten dollars if you use fabric from clothes you don’t wear or camp shirts, sheets from three years ago and even left over fabric from previous projects. This craft also adds a pop of color to your white walls.

2. Deck out your ten dollar mirror from Walmart/Target with flowers and hot glue.

This look is very cheap to accomplish, especially if you look for flowers at Dollar Tree. You can get a surplus of flowers there for ten dollars. Simply remove the flowers from the stem and hot glue them to the mirror’s frame.

3. Just paint some mason jars, and feel like a classy person.

If you have a mom like mine, Mason jars are just laying around the house. Just swipe a couple and tell her you love her. Go to Walmart and buy some acrylic paint. Store pens, pencils, highlighters, and even makeup brushes in your new Mason jar containers.

4. Washi tapeing wall or door art is so easy, y’all.

Washi tape is cheap. You can get it at any store that carries craft and office supplies. You can get rolls of it at target for $5.99. Washi tape art will also make you look trendier than you probably are.

5. Lights? Lights!

A strand of 50 lights can be purchased at Target for $5.99, and you can purchase a pack of clothes pins for $2.99.

6. Use a collage frame as a weekly calendar.

You can find this frame at target for $9.99, and you can go to your local craft store and pick up loose sheets of scrapbook paper for a dollar to insert into the frame. Get a dry erase marker and Windex to use every week!

7. Use cheap clip boards to keep track of projects, and to make you look hyper productive.

Use paper and mod podge, or acrylic paint to spice up cheap clipboards that are less than a dollar online. Another hack: Make your own mod podge using Elmer’s glue: eight ounces of glue plus four ounces of water.

8. Paint your favorite quotes on a canvas.

A two-pack of 11” X 14” Canvases are $5.47 on walmart.com, and you can use whatever paint you want.

9. Bring life into your dorm with succulents.

Use old pots and paint them a solid color, then draw cute faces on them. Go to Walmart and buy succulents. Have fun.

10. Use 2 Panels of sheer curtains behind your bed to feel like a princess.

You can find cheap panels of curtains at Walmart for about five dollars each. Add lights for the Tumblr touch.

These were just a few ideas to transform your dorm from a temporary space to Home Sweet Dorm. Hope it helps make your next year away from home comfy and incredible!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
