When most people think of the holidays, they envision snow, hot chocolate, Christmas music, and ornaments. However, when I think of the holiday season approaching, I think of chakli, lighting tea lights, and getting all dolled up in traditional Indian clothes. That's right, it's Diwali time!!
Some of my best memories with my family have been during Diwali. For those who may not know, Diwali is essentially Indian Christmas (but better, because it's usually about 5 days long). It's a Hindu holiday which celebrates the triumph of good over evil, which is why we light lamps and candles, and put up string lights all around our houses, in order to show the return of light in dark times. To learn more about the origins and significance of Diwali, take a look at this article. More than anything, Diwali, to me, is a time to celebrate my culture and my roots with my family and friends.

During Diwali, we always make a bunch of different snacks. Some of my favorites are chakli, a savory, spiral-shaped snack, and shankarpali, another snack which is sweet, and fried (what more could a girl ask for?) Every year, my family and I cook some of these foods together, while blasting Hindi music and dancing along. We also have a Diwali party with all of our close friends, when we get dressed up in fancy clothes and get together to have some good food, light sparklers, and fireworks, and enjoy each others' company.

Being on campus and away from my home and my culture, this Diwali season has felt different. And although I miss my traditions at home, and the time I spend with my family cooking, singing, and dancing, I have found myself creating new traditions. My friends here on campus were super curious about Diwali, so one night we hung up colored lights in our dorm room and ate some of the above snacks my mom sent me while I told them the story of Diwali! It was really heartwarming for me to know that no matter where I go, I will always be able to have a piece of my home with me.
So, I'd like to wish everyone Happy Diwali!
