Telling the story of the move from Toronto to California, artist JAHKOY just released his new EP “Foreign Water.” Although it seems like the 21-year-old Canadian appeared out of nowhere, he’s actually been in the music industry for a while. He started creating music at the age of 11, eventually releasing rap under the name Raheem. Now, he’s ready to re-introduce himself to the world. The artist says that his move to LA was “an experience” that was necessary because LA is truly “the land of opportunity for music and entertainment.” “I was stuck in a box,” he said, LA will “move [me] forward as an artist.”
For JAHKOY, music has always been about “telling the story honestly,” and sharing his experiences with the world. And a big part of that story was how Toronto’s growth affected his personal growth. For a while there, “the coolest thing about Toronto was Vince Carter,” but now “we have music…pop-culture…[and] people are paying attention.” To JAHKOY, people are always remarking about how “there must be something in the water,” hence the EP’s title “Foreign Water.”
Listening to “Foreign Water” you will notice a blend of different styles of music, especially a Caribbean influence because of his background. This is characteristic of the artist: “I grew up in a generation where everything I listened to had a fresh new sound." Because of technology, and how accessing different types of music has become so easy, he was committed to always “bring[ing] something new to the table…keeping it hot and exciting.”
JAHKOY has already been receiving acclaims from Zane Lowe, Drake and Pharrell, as well as been labeled the “Artist to watch” by Billboard. So what’s next? Maybe an album, maybe a couple music videos. Regards 2017 promises to be a wild year for the artist.
