Over the next few months we will begin experiencing even more divide in this country than we already have been. As this election takes shape and the debates begin, everyone begins to exert their beliefs onto others. People having their own opinions is not a problem, as freedom of speech is among our most sacred guaranteed rights as American citizens, the real problem lies in the nature of this speech.
Most of the things you see when you scroll through Facebook or watch the news are covered with hate. As a society we have increasingly become more hateful and less considerate of the opinions and feelings of the other people in this world. Is it because we have become less religious as a society? Is it because of the decline of face-to-face interaction in our daily lives? Is it because of violent video games or the two party system or global warming or Kanye West? Who knows.
I feel like I represent the majority of people around me when I say that I just want peace among people and for everyone to be free to live their lives without fear and hatred surrounding us all. Many other college students I have talked to have also expressed that they are tired of all the violence and hate around the world. This is not to say you should not get involved in political organizations and express your opinions on Facebook, as many do, but, as you engage with others, consider your values and please spread some love.
I do not care what your religion or culture is, I will treat you with respect. Some values cross over religious barriers and are applicable in the lives of people around the world: “Love thy neighbor,” “Thou shalt not kill,” and “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.” Why do we have to be reminded of these things instead of being decent human beings?
As a country we need to stand as one to reach the best possible America. My hope is that, as we near the elections and this polarizing time in our nation, we can become more unified as people, not as Democrats, Republicans, or Libertarians, but as citizens of the United States of America and as Children of God.
