United We Stand?

The political ignorance and effectiveness of the two-party system.

It seems as though, with the current presidential primaries, our nation is pulling itself further apart rather than coming together for political discussions and resolutions. The “gray” area, where most Americans place themselves (independent electorate) is dissolving and the extremes of both parties are becoming more prominent. Is it the powerlessness felt by the people in the political process that is leading to this irrational political season, or is our country as dived as it is being represented?

From Donald Trump fans being harassed and even assaulted by “protesters,” to the Democratic Party which faces division similar to the Republican side; resembling the mood of the 1968 riots which took place after the Democratic convention, we are seeing a nation that seems to be in a phase of self hatred and insecurity. What is it that is uniting our nation at this present moment and where has our unity gone?

Looking at the state-by-state opinions on human rights, health care, medicine, war and education it seems as though our nation is more divided than ever. Is there a chance for common ground for re-unification or are we on track to dissipate as the roman empire did. How can a nation so divided by each state's idea of the American dream come together to form a united state of America and what ideals and legislation can be passed to make both parties unite?

Compromise is key, but the idea of compromise has been marked taboo with the dissolution of the Independent Party's voice. Does a two party system offer enough representation for the American people or does it force politicians to sacrifice their own morals to fit into the “parties” beliefs; breeding corrupt officials and politicians with weak convictions?

Whoever you support and whatever ideals run your motive of thinking I believe the most important part of this nation is to understand the vast diversity that makes us who we are. Recognizing this and understanding that not everyone will be satisfied with any decision made, we must then realize the youth that our nation has, in comparison to the rest of the world, and the impact our young nation has had on the world.

The entire world holds their breath for our election cycle to be determined because it effects not only us, but them. What direction will our country take and is a political revolution the only way to reform our crumbling government and allow the American people to be heard? As a millennial I am forced to witness my generation intentionally ignore the political process which only allows this cycle of powerlessness to continue.

We must as a nation take part in the political process to be successful members of society. The outlook of political ignorance should be condemned by all who care about our nations growth. Political awareness and action lead to political progress. It is time to stop taking the back seat position on politics and really locate our nations fundamental principles so we can evolve as a nation that represents our current views.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
