Are We Really Free ?

AMERICA ! The land of the free. A place where many cultures took drastic measures to become a citizen. Millions of people have lost their lives, left their families and so much more over the many years to become apart of the “great” country. A country who pledges:

“ I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

It was very clear that our founding fathers wanted to create a nation where all lives matter, But in 2016 if you turn on your TV you’ll see that we are far from this goal. Although The united states experienced successive waves of immigration for many years ,and places like New York City flourished with many cultures integrated as communities. Although neighborhoods clustered with many different people cultural acceptance was always an issue. For many years you’ll see different cultures become labeled and stereotyped for their beliefs , religions, and even skin color. For many years people have died to fight for basic rights even though our constitution was built for the people , by the people who were immigrants themselves.

Fast forward a little and cultural diversity is little more accepted or other words the hype begins to die down. You began to see cultures intertwined with one another to soon earn the United States the title as the most diverse country in the world. Even earning the nickname of a “melting pot” due to the fact you can find nearly a mixture and combination of every culture. In fact, in years to come, they say there will be no pure breed of any culture because of interracial breeding.

Now fast forward again, and not only is cultural acceptance starting to boil over but there are many issues back with it.However because we are so diverse it’s not a cultural issue anymore because we’ve built a nation not off of beliefs but of cultural acceptance. But why is it hundreds of years later we are still fighting each other for what we believe in, who deserves respect , who's in charge or better yet who deserves to be treated like a human? We are captives of our own system and many don’t even realize it. We are constantly fighting each other for rights that shouldn’t have been taken away from us anyway. We were taught for many years how to divide each other by any means necessary; The color of our skin, the way your nose is shaped, the color of your hair, the way you talk, your eye color, who you choose to love, etc. When the truth is we are all human , we are all of the same species , and we are alike in so many ways it’s mind boggling.

So is being free something we have to fight for ? technically no we are all free in a sense when you look at the bigger picture. In order to feel free, we have to break down the way we were taught to think. No person or race is better than another , we are all humans it’s in our nature to make mistakes and grow from it. So I say again is it America the land of the free ? or are we products of a failed system

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
