Divergence: Fate Vs. Destiny

The future is the result of either a fated, or destined path. However, these paths set different moods, attitudes and connotations.

When we look far ahead, to a point in time that we would refer to as "we made it", was it fate, or was it destiny? Well first and foremost, what's the difference? Don't they mean the exact same thing? They may exist in the same realm of synonymous meanings, but there is a hidden difference. A difference some would consider silly, but others would consider through a spiritual sense.

Superman and Lex Luther: The fate of foes

In comics, TV shows and movies, the villain almost always refers to his encounter with the superhero through the eyes of fate. He may use destiny to lighten the mood, to trick the character into a false relationship, but fate will have been there all along, disguised.

"You will meet your fate." Who wouldn't find that intimidating, scary even? We have developed a negative connotation to the word itself. I am not saying that fate is always condemned to nothing more than a negative resonance, but when you have a decision to make, which will you label yourself as, fated, or destined?

Purpose and Destiny: One and the same

"You were destined for greatness." It's amazing how close those words seem to relate. Destiny is a powerful term. It has the power to inspire, motivate, encourage. It gives us hope for a moment of true and pure happiness.

With this word, we become unlimited. There are infinite possibilities in this world, possibilities in which destiny can conform. We are not bounded by a fated path. No. Destiny allows us to search, discover and unravel our purpose and our future.

We are not chained down by the weight of negativity and hopelessness. We are given the ability to choose our destined path, no matter what that path may be.

The Freedom to Choose

Some may believe that fate and destiny are one and the same. Some may believe that destiny withholds positivity, and that fate is our true nature. However, it all depends on how you see your path. Are you stuck? Do you desire a new direction?

So where do you stand? Are you fated, or destined in life?

But remember, you are the only one that can decide the course of your existence.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
