On Thursday, Republican leaders revealed their plan to replace and repeal the Affordable Care Act. This health care change is predicted to have a huge negative impact for many of the country's most vulnerable citizens.
It is believed that the new health care act that will be put in place will greatly cut Medicaid funding. This cut has the power to reduce access to medical care as well as home and community based services for disabled and elderly Americans. This will influence those vulnerable Americans to either die without the necessary care or be forced into institutions. On top of cuts to Medicaid, the bill proposes scaling back tax credits for middle class Americans who buy their own health insurance as well as defunding Planned Parenthood.
Following the draft of the bill being released on Thursday, ADAPT, a national disability rights organization organized a protest outside over the a Senate health care bill outside of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office. The protesters yelled chants like "don't touch Medicaid, save our liberty." Capitol police reported that they arrested 43 people for refusing to end their protest. Some of the protesters removed themselves from their wheelchairs as a sign of their "die-in" demonstration.
Police were seen forcefully removing the disabled protesters from outside the office some in their wheelchairs, and some holding medical equipment. Others were physically carried against their will out of their wheelchairs. Many continued to chant their disapproval of the bill draft.
