Hello darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again.
It's no mystery that we live in a world full of evil. Every time we turn on the news, our eyes get stabbed by so much bad news. Murder, theft, and injustices of every kind seem to be the most prominent problem in our society. And, unfortunately, it is so commonplace. We've become so used to bad news, there's basically no point in bringing it up anymore. Why say anything? Nothing will change.
In the naked light, I saw ten thousand people, maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never shared. And no one dared disturb the sound of silence.
It's possible to voice our opinions on the evil. We can speak against injustice in hundreds of ways. We can preach messages against evil. We can cast out violence through the power of music. We can paint pictures and write poetry that spreads a message of love that can overshadow the haunting message of hate that floods our senses every waking moment, but it's so easy to remain silent.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know. Silence, like a cancer, grows. Hear my words, that I might teach you. Take my arms, that I might reach you." But my words, like silent raindrops, fell, and echoed in the wells of silence.
No change will ever be made by standing still. No lives will be affected by silence. We were born with talents and voices that we are destined to use. Why on earth would anyone let them go to waste? No one in the world can stand up for what's right the way you can. Your words have meaning. Let them out into the open. Stop waiting for change and start being the change. Break the silence and make a difference in a way that only you can.
And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning, and the words that it was forming. And the sign said: "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls," and whispered in the sound of silence.
This article was based off of the song "Sound of Silence," originally performed by Simon & Garfunkel, but covered by Disturbed. You can hear the original song here.
