Blast From The Past

Thanks to disposable cameras.

There's something sentimental and special about film shots. Maybe it's the pressure of limited number of shots on the camera. Or the effort put into getting the perfect shot. A sense of nostalgia overwhelms me when I purchase disposable cameras for my trips.

Memories flash back of when I was a kid, how this camera was a portal to express my imagination. I had 25 shots to prove I had the best camping trip ever.

Back in the day, coming home from a trip meant waiting 7-10 days for film to develop. This created a massive sense of anticipation. Excitement built up to see my photos. Picking up my photos included re-living my vacation and different memories through 8x4" prints.

In today's world, we have all conformed to become worshipers of instant gratification. We are trained to always have our phone with us. Good news is, we no longer need cameras to take photos, we have our phones. It's accessible, easy and free! We can take as many photos as we want and can view them seconds later. Then, we can post them in a matter of seconds for all of our friends and family to see on social media. However, our cell phones tend to distract us from time to time while we should be enjoying the moment and surroundings for what it is.

Though it may seem easier to use your phone, try bringing along a disposable camera on your next adventure to bring a new twist. Buying a GoPro or Life Proof case can be expensive, however disposables are fairly cheap. In my experience they are fairly durable, they aren't damaged by small amounts of water, sand or dirt. This also helps remove the worry favor of gear getting wet or damaged. When it's time to kayak or SUP we toss a disposable in a dry bag and call it good!

Also, the disposable camera brings in an element of fun by capturing moments you usually wouldn't record. It stimulates creativity and makes all of its users a photographer.

Making a disposable camera part of your trips can create a cherished tradition. When your having vacation blues, picking up your disposable shots helps remind yourself of your trip and all the memories made. With each print comes an emotion, a feeling, a memory.

Simplify your next trip, don't fall victim to distraction from your cell phone, pick up a disposable camera and capture your favorite times in a new way.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
