For the past few years Disney has gained a reputation for remaking animated classics. Who has not talked about and/or seen Maleficent or The Jungle Book? It is hard for me to have a conversation about Disney without bringing up movies that could have remakes in the future. I admit I fantasize about my favorite movies in live action form. My wish for a Beauty and the Beast remake came true.
Disney is far from done with its remake trend. A whole collection of live action remakes have been announced, some already in the works.
When it comes to the Princesses, Mulan is in the works and already looking for Chinese actors and actresses. This movie about the warrior woman is slated to be released in 2018. A movie about Snow White's sister, Rose Red, has also been announced, and will focus on her quest to save Snow White after she has bitten the poisonous apple. The Little Mermaid is going to be remade although Chloe Grace Moretz, who was supposed to play Ariel, dropped out of the project.
Less popular movies that a lot of people have never even watched or barely remember are getting remade. Tim Burton has signed on to make a live action Dumbo, which no doubt will be dark and creepy given who is directing it. The Sword in the Stone, which follows a young King Arthur, is coming to the silver screen and so is Pinocchio, the tale of a wooden puppet who wants to be a real boy.
Another Disney villain is getting her own remake and this time it is Cruella. The lover of fur coats will be portrayed by the lovely Emma Stone, who starred in Easy A and The House Bunny. The movie Maleficent will have a sequel.
Some secondary characters and sidekicks will be the stars of the show in other remakes. The Genie from Aladdin will star in a prequel called Genies that will explain how he ended up in the lamp. Tinker Bell from Peter Pan will get her own movie and the Reese Witherspoon mightl portray the feisty fairy.
Finally, the movie I am most looking forward to besides Beauty and the Beast is the remake of The Lion King. It will include songs from the original animated movie and will be directed by Jon Favreau, who directed The Jungle Book.
I have no doubt Disney will come up with other remakes. Even though there are haters out there, I am personally excited. As a Disney fan, I am keeping up to date with the news and I am counting down the days when I get to the reimagined Belle.
