Home is not always the place where you live. For some, it's a person and, for others, it's the place they feel the most comfortable.
For most people in Southern California, such as myself, Disneyland is that place.
Why does Disneyland feel like home for so many like myself?
First off, it's because although everything has been the same for years, it has grown just as you have. Walking down Main Street, the buildings all look familiar although they have changed as the years have gone on. No matter how long it has been since you've been to Disneyland the castle remains.
Then, there's the comforting music. Everyone knows that every area in the park has a different music but there is always going to be an area soundtrack that has your heart. For some, it's the nostalgic Main Street music and, for others, it's the sounds of New Orleans Square.
Whenever I would go to Disneyland as a child, it felt safe. As if nothing bad could ever happen to you. I recall going to Disneyland a short time after my parent's divorce and feeling safe and at peace. Inside the gates nothing could bring me down. Now as an adult when life gets difficult, I find myself sitting at Disneyland forgetting about the weight of the world.
Then there's the food. Every person on this planet has that food they absolutely love to eat whenever they're happy or need comfort. For my girlfriend it's the chicken nuggets from Golden Horseshoe. For myself, it's churros. My uncle always gets Corn Dogs, whereas my sister always gets a candy apple. Whenever you get that special treat at Disneyland, it brings out the same feeling you'd get eating your family specialty.
I began coming to Disneyland as a child, and it felt like home way back then and still does to this day. Each trip to the park brings me back to simpler time and I can't imagine anywhere else ever feeling like home to me.
