On November 12, 2019, what we'd all been waiting for finally happened: unlimited access to some of the most popular TV shows and movies. For me, this was an excuse to forgo a social life and dive into my childhood favorites. Like the rest of the world, Disney+ is a dream come true, but can it hold up against the other streaming heavy-hitters?
So I am one of the people who bought Disney+ as soon as November 12th hit. Snowfall canceled my morning and I was living large with Alex, Mitchie, and Raven. Yet even in the spirit of Disney magic, I noticed realities. For one, the system was crashing right and left. It is fair enough considering while watching Disney+ on my phone, there was an entire newscast about it on Good Morning America. Yet, these crashes lasted for about the first week and even as the service improved we cannot ignore the bugs. Disney+ has a spotty "continued watching" bar. One second I am ready to continue following the Mandalorian, next minute I have to scrub to find my place. Not to mention the ineffective sections to find shows. And the cherry on top, there is something missing, isn't there? For the life of me, I cannot find "Sonny with a Chance", "Austin and Ally", and why is "Sky High" not available for another year? I checked and these shows are not available on Netflix, Hulu, or Prime. There is also a little tude towards the fact that the new series from Disney is weekly and not come in full seasons. Now apart from these, the release of Disney+ starts something, a competition.
When Netflix streaming came out, it not only changed how we watch TV and movies, but how they are made. Now we see a lot more shows, fewer episodes, and too many things to keep up with it. Then came Hulu. With the more streaming services that come out, the closer we are to regular cable tv. With Disney+, we are moving in that direction. Along with Disney+, Apple TV and HBO Max are also coming to the table. With more exclusive content, it's time to make a choice on what's worth it. That's why we get bundle deals. For example, Disney+'s running a deal with Hulu and ESPN for under $20 a month. So where are we going with this and who will win?
Honestly, in my opinion, I think that Disney+ can overpower Netflix. Netflix has experience when it comes to streaming, but Disney is the heavy-hitter in EVERYTHING ELSE! Content, money, and power. With time, more content releases, we may be looking at the new streaming-leader of our time.
