With the release of the new Disney movie Moana, the world’s now up to the fourteenth official Disney princess. These beautiful, elegant ladies have been around for generations, and their stories are ones that will always be with us forever. But like in all royalty, there is a sort of clear hierarchy. Here’s my personal opinion and ranking of the Disney Princesses.
14. Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog”:
I totally respect Tiana’s work ethics and her concentration on her life without being a princess. But honestly, she’s kind of off the radar to me. Yes, she’s the first African-American princess, and a working girl which is really admirable. But she also spent 80% of her movie as a frog...
13. Aurora from “Sleeping Beauty”:
Honestly, it took me a while to figure out that her name was actually Aurora and not Sleeping Beauty. Although, she's verybeautiful and her singing voice made strangers in the woods turn heads. Let’s be real though, we’re talking about a girl who only has about eighteen lines in the entire movie, and spends almost the rest of it—well, sleeping. Her three fairy guardians (not to mention her love interest, Prince Phillip) did most of the heavy lifting.
12. Elsa from “Frozen”:
I don’t mean to give her a poor ranking. But in my eyes, she’s technically not a princess anymore. Anyways, “Queen” Elsa has some pretty unbelievable (and hazardous) ice powers, plus her song “Let It Go” has been quoted and used in karaoke by people from ages seven to twenty-five. But there was never really much to know about Elsa, other than her control (or lack thereof) of powers and that she could create an impressive ice castle.
11. Pocahontas from “Pocahontas”:
Sure, she paints with all the colors of the wind. Heck, I do too sometimes. But her story didn’t really appeal to me. Maybe because hers story is a loosely-historical one, and I’ve never been one to really follow history. I can’t lie though, her animal friends are adorable.
10. Anna from “Frozen”:
Again, no hate. She’s a pretty cool girl and definitely relatable to most girls as we tend to fall in love sometimes. Whether it's too hard, too fast, or sometimes, gets us in trouble. But like...that was her naivety kicking in. She also can get scary when angry and once you rile up an enormous, menacing beast of snow with ice claws...that’s not exactly the best idea.
9. Merida from “Brave”:
Our first Disney Pixar princess! Here we have Merida, who refuses to follow the stereotypical princess role and does not have any desire to get married. Besides the arguments with her mother on her life, she has a stable family. But...she does turn her mother into a bear.
8. Jasmine from “Aladdin”:
Beautiful princess, beautiful voice, scary when angered. But the movie doesn’t revolve around her character, she’s actually the deuteragonist. Still, she did manage to outwit the movie villain. You know, after kissing him... (Ew).
7. Moana from “Moana”:
We’ll put her halfway because she’s new. I’ve only seen Moana once, but it was just enough to make me a huge fan. Moana has a lot going for her and she definitely knows what she’s doing and who she is. Plus, you should hear her sing. All of the Disney Princesses are pretty famous for their singing, and Moana took it to another level. Not to mention she holds her own and willingly sets off towards the dangerous waters in order to help save her island and her people. That’s pretty amazing.
6. Ariel from “The Little Mermaid”:
Well, she pretty much defied her father and rebel like the sixteen-year-old teenager she is. But still, we have to give her some credit. She’s the first Disney Princess to also be a mermaid. She’s also the first in the ‘Disney Renaissance’ Era. So she pretty much turned the tables around and gave ol’ Prince Eric a hand with defeating Ursula.
5. Cinderella from “Cinderella”:
Cinderella in my eyes has been at the top far too many times, and with good reason too, don’t get me wrong. But I think she just should get off her high horse a bit. I mean, yeah she worked hard for what she got, her stepfamily pretty much abused her, and we all have to sympathize with her. But she has a castle dedicated to her in Disney World, she’s always shown as if she’s the most important in the Disney lineup, and her story’s been practically remade far too often. Not everything’s about you, girl.
4. Belle from “Beauty and the Beast”:
I was little when I saw Beauty and the Beast for the first time and it terrified me so much that I never got to appreciate it. Seriously, that mob scene could be traumatizing for any young child. But, now that I’m able to watch it again with a little more backbone, I can truly appreciate how great the story is. Belle completes it so well, with her personality and all. Here we have a princess who looks past people’s exterior and sees them for who they are on the inside. Cause that’s what it’s all about in life.
3. Rapunzel from “Tangled”:
Rapunzel’s character kind of speaks to me. I guess that’s because she’s so adorable when she’s naive and enthusiastic about life, not knowing about the real dangers outside her tower walls. She also throws quite an impressive punch with her frying pan and traps a guy in her closet with her magical long hair. Not many girls say they can do that.
2. Mulan from “Mulan”:
Of course, the original badass princess. And yes, she does find love. But her love life takes a backseat, as she pretty much singlehandedly saves China from the Huns. She also chops her hair with a sword like a boss, and she didn’t even care.
1. Snow White from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”:
She was the first ever Disney Princess. But that’s not really why I ranked her high up. I guess it’s because whenever I asked, people have told me I’m most like Snow White. I mean, hey, she has to hide out from an evil step-mother who wants her dead but she still manages to have a smile and stay positive. She proves that there's a way to keep moving forward even if your Evil Queen of a step-mother tries to poison you with an apple (or send a huntsman to get your heart...literally).
