On July 22 Disney channel premiered the new series “Elena of Avalor,” as a spinoff from “Sofia the First.” Elena is scooping up a lot of attention for a Disney Junior show, as Disney’s first Latina Princess. While, she is not from any one culture or country, her world is fictional and inspired from an array of Latin cultures and folklore.

This is important, given Disney's popularity and lack of representation overall.

Some see the show on Disney Junior as short-changing representation, because films reach wider audiences, and have higher quality. There should definitely be a Disney Latina princess on the big screen and soon, whether it's Elena or not. Though in the meantime, there are several reasons Elena’s television debut has unique benefits. Televisions for children is often more inspiring than their movies because they have less of a necessary profit to reach, and thus are able to take risks with what hasn't guaranteed a top seller of the past. Elena doesn't have to be formulaic.

In having many 20-minute increments for stories, there are many inspiring aspects that “Elena of Avalor” is allowed to focus on. We get to see Elena in a leadership role as a princess, instead of merely having a title, or only having leadership as a behind-the-scenes assumption. Along with being a leader, there is an admittance that this is still a learning process. The premise of the first episode is that 16-year-old Elena, despite her eagerness, is too young to rule her kingdom without a grand council. This is a focus on the strength in family relationships, friendships and a strong female gets to take the lead.

There are going to be subplots when the residents of a castle are few, and episodes are 20 minutes long. This was beneficial for giving more focus to Elena’s younger sister, and fellow princess Isabel, who is a force to be reckoned with. Her yearning for knowledge, and ability to invent what only fictional children can, are going to be inspiring for all of the little girls watching. Who says you can’t compete in the young inventors completion in a dress?

While the upcoming concept of “Elena of Avalor” earned attention from adults and media, will the show drawn in older audience members? Having a followings of ages beyond the targeted range is a mark of a great children’s show. We should give Elena this chance, because Disney has recently churned out extremely watchable shows of "Gravity Falls," "Wander Over Yonder," and "Star vs. the Forces of Evil."

While the quality of shows often fluctuate from its beginning, “Elena of Avalor” so far appears to be on level with “My Little Pony,” in terms of the amount of immaturity an older audience may have to step over to enjoy. There are instances that dip below this level, but overall if you do not feel affronted by Hasbo’s new adaption of ponies, than Elena may have something for you. While the watch-ability certainly falls bellows the popular Disney animated movies, I predict that Elena will still appear on young adult’s phone cases, key chains, and notebooks all the same. We've already seen some amazing fan art, and plenty of Tumblr posts.

Already Elena has proven more “adult” than “Sofia the First.” The voice acting is more mature, and less high-pitched than that of true children’s shows, the jingly music accompanying action is not overwhelming, and while there is one song per episode, they aren’t too bad.

There are moments that lend the thought of, “uh oh, this is a bit cheesy” but then there is usually a joke or other to offset it. Just when you start to roll your eyes and think, “Really? How will my young adult self enjoy this show when there is a singing rock monster?” you’ll recognize the voice of Tituss Burgess, aka Titus in “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and become perfectly fine with it.

The first Latina Disney Princess, however deserve something better than the Disney Junior low-budget animation. If Elena becomes more popular, fans have the right to expect higher quality for future seasons. For now its just something to get used to, but it did lead to a pretty spectacular castle.

Is it just me, or do some princesses have a very similar personality type? Elena, in this case, is a breath of fresh air. She is outgoing, without being over the top. She’s a natural leader, but still shows us her relatable flaws.

Only time will tell if this show will be one that an older audience can enjoy. While this show does have a promising start, many are not able to stand the test of time, and earn a cult following from young adults. Either way, for today’s children, it is a good thing to exist.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
