Have you ever noticed how pretty much all of the Disney princesses are fair-skinned, straight, and able-bodied?
It wasn't until the 90's that we got the first one that wasn't white—Jasmine and Pocahontas forever changed the way we see Disney princesses and how they should look. They showed that princesses can be any ethnicity and that girls should know that they're beautiful no matter where they come from.
The princesses are getting more diverse, but it seems like only their skin color has been changing.
There are rumors that Elsa is going to have a girlfriend in the sequel to Frozen (which is awesome), but no one has mentioned creating a Disney character with a disability.
It's rare when people with disabilities are portrayed on TV and when they are, they're usually in some sad story about how hard their life is. And I'll admit living with a disability isn't always easy, but it's not the worst thing that could happen to you. And the kids growing up with one are not going to know why they don't see anyone that looks like them each time they go see a new Disney movie.
And I was one of them.
I didn't understand why I never saw any girls in wheelchairs on the screen when I'd be sitting at home watching movies. I didn't understand why the kids in school didn't want to sit with me at lunch or play with me on the playground. I didn't understand why I was the only one without a boyfriend by the time I started high school.
I never saw anyone like me living their dreams on TV, so I wondered if I'd ever be able to make mine come true. I couldn't climb on the jungle gym with the other kids, so they didn't understand I could still play with them. I didn't see any princesses that looked like me and living their happily ever after with a prince, so I didn't think I'd ever find love.
I didn't understand why I was treated so differently.
We still live in a society that shows living with a disability as something that's horrible and scary. We're afraid of anything that's different. And that has to change.
If Disney created a princess with a disability, the younger generation would see that it's nothing to be afraid of. Kids who look like that princess wouldn't be seen as different and wouldn't be left out so much. And they wouldn't see themselves as being any different from their friends.
A lot of kids watch Disney movies—watching a princess living her life with a disability would create a new normal and affect how those kids treat others in the future.
Disney, next time you are planning to create a new movie think about the kids who nobody thinks about.
