On November 12, Walt Disney Company released its new streaming app, Disney+. With this new streaming app, they released a handful of new shows, like "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" and "The Mandalorian," and new movies, like the live-action "Lady and the Tramp." They also released many, many old Disney movies and nostalgic Disney Channel shows. The Internet is absolutely losing their minds over the fact that we can easily watch all the shows and movies that we grew up with.
While I love having the ability to watch "Hannah Montana" and "The Lion King" anytime, I think that Disney+ is throwing us into our nostalgic tendencies, and it's not a good thing.
In 2019, Disney released nine new movies, and seven of those movies were either a sequel or a live-action. Some of these movies include "Frozen 2," "Toy Story 4," "Aladdin," and "The Lion King."
Disney has become a major player in the entertainment industry since they now own huge franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. This year, they made an exponential profit from "Avengers: Endgame," and they are expecting a new Star Wars movie, "The Rise of Skywalker," to be in theaters soon.
While I would love to see a live-action version of "Hercules," I am very sick of seeing these reboots and remakes. Reboots, spin-offs, and live-actions have constantly been thrown in our faces, and most of the reboots and remakes have gotten bad reviews compared to their predecessors.
Disney movies haven't been taking risks and are only falling back on what they are comfortable. But Disney knows they can do this because they can rely on profiting from our nostalgia. We are comfortable with watching all these live-action remakes of our favorite movies, and we get annoyed when they try to change it up. While nostalgia is a wonderful thing, it should only be used in small doses or else we will keep seeing the same stuff over and over again.
Disney became such a powerful entertainment company because of the risks that were taken by Walt Disney. They aren't taking risks anymore because Disney knows that we want to find out what happened to Lizzie McGuire in her adult years or what happened to the toys after "Toy Story 3." Disney+ is only going to enforce their lack of creativity and make things worse.
