Disney Is Still Cool

College students still love all things Disney and that's OK!

Remember when you were little and everything revolved around Disney World? Every year you begged your parents to take you to this magical place that all your cool friends talked about. Then when you finally went, it was the best place ever. Sure, it was hot and sticky (and you may have had a broken foot), but it was awesome. All of the princesses were there and all those shows that Disney 365 talked about (don’t tell me you don’t remember Disney 365).

While you were growing up, the trips that your friends took to Disney weren’t as frequent and you stopped begging to go. I’m not saying you ever stopped loving Disney (How could you?), but it just went on the back-burner until you started college. All of a sudden, sororities have Disney recruitment themes and all your friends watch Disney movies at night when they do homework. Every ounce of your love for Disney World came flooding back. You were DYING to go “throw what you know” in front of the castle. Every Disney shirt they sold at Target now hung in your closet and if you were in a sorority you had a Disney shirt for it. Everything was Disney again, and it was so great.

When my mom finally gave in and took me to Disney, everything was just how I remembered. I didn’t care that I was there with my mom, or that I was an adult. I had the best time ever. Being a college student, life is hard. We have bills, cafeteria food, no elevator in the building, a tiny bed, no dog, dues to pay and hard college classes. Disney is a cool escape from that; it’s a return to childhood.

Sometimes just watching "Tangled" while I do my research paper is just what I need to get started. It’s still cool to like Disney World. It’s a beautiful place to go, and it’s probably wise to head on over there while your parents still support you financially because it won’t be fun to pay for in 10 years. Everyone can agree on a good Disney movie too, there are never any uncomfortable topics and they will always teach you something new! Buy those Disney letter shirts and make those Pinterest crafts. Life isn’t easy (especially in college) but I promise Disney helps. So pop in your favorite movie, or wear your old Disney ears while you do your homework. You may look silly, but at least your having fun, right?

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.
