I Don't Know How To Contour My Face And That's Okay

Just because you don't wear makeup doesn't mean you aren't beautiful!

I Don't Know How To Contour My Face And That's Okay

I barely even know what contour means, let alone know how to actually do it to my face. This year, social media was filled with videos on “how to contour your face” and “what to do to make your makeup last all day.” In addition, every other person who posts these videos claims to be a makeup artist and will let you pay them so they can add a cloak to your face to make you almost unrecognizable. But I never learned how to do it to myself.

For those of us who don’t know: contouring is using specific makeup techniques to give shape and structure to part of the face. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have made it the latest makeup trend. From the little bit of information I was able to understand, you contour your face by placing different types of concealers in different areas around your face and then blend them together. A person can make their nose appear skinnier, their cheekbones higher—or change their basic facial shape altogether.

Most days, I barely wear makeup, if any at all. My most timely makeup routine consists of a small line of brown eyeliner and a quick brush of mascara to my lashes. On days when I am feeling like I need a little extra, I might even go real crazy and switch out the brown eyeliner for black. It’s not that I don’t like wearing makeup; it’s just that I don’t know how.

I tried to learn so that I would "fit in" with the style of wearing makeup every single day but it didn’t work out for me. I had friends do my makeup so I could see how different I looked and could decide if it was worth it for me to practice and practice until my blemishes were gone and my face was perfect. But after looking at how much makeup costs (way too much) and honestly not being very self-conscious about how I look without it, I decided it’s OK that I do not understand how to contour my face.

I’ve just never been overly into makeup and I don’t feel like it matters either way if people wear it or not. That is their choice. I would never put somebody down because they feel best in makeup, because I would never want someone to put me down because I don’t wear much of it.

Many people know how to contour their face, and it looks beautiful.

I don’t know how to contour my face, and I look beautiful, too.

Both are just fine, and that's okay.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
