Even as adults, we all can't forget about the songs that got us through our youth. No matter how old, these Disney Channel songs hold a special place in our hearts.
1. "This Is Me"- Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas.
Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas in "Camp Rock"
GiphyI cry every single time I hear this song. At the intro. Before Demi even starts to sing. This "Camp Rock" classic really hits home. The movie debuted in 2008 and changed lives. It was a start of a new Disney Channel movie musical franchise and the rise of some unforgettable Disney stars. After Demi Lovato's character, Mitchie, struggles the entire summer to find her inner confidence, she performs this song at Final Jam for all the world to see. Not to mention, Joe's character, Shane, has been low-key trying to find her the whole time and jumps in to make this original solo a duet.
The whole thing is magic! "Camp Rock" was Demi's first movie, and the first time many of us were seeing her. It was also the introduction of a musician many of us would love for the rest of our lives. "This Is Me" is about gaining the courage to be yourself. Mitchie proclaims "No more hiding who I wanna be!" and we feel it in our soul. Whenever I need reminding to not give up my dreams, I think of this song!
2. "Determinate"- Lemonade Mouth.
Lemonade Mouth on Good Morning America
Giphy"Lemonade Mouth" was possibly the last incredible musical of Disney's Golden age (2006-2012). This song is a great example why. Carrying on with the theme of facing your fears and being who you want to be, "Lemonade Mouth" is one of Disney's most daring movies. The movie starred Bridgit Mendler, and a bunch of other people who'd quickly vanish into oblivion. Oh, and Hayley Kyoko is in it too! They're a group of misfits and decide to form this band named Lemonade Mouth. The whole message of the band is to fight the system and challenge the status quo. They're literally Disney's NWA."Determinate" happens early in the movie, as the group performs for the first time together. The song is edgy, alive, and sets the spirit for the rest of the movie. I think that's what Disney was going for. "Lemonade Mouth" was just the awesomeness we needed to end a generation.
3. "Breaking Free"- Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens in "High School Musical"
Giphy"High School Musical" is the Disney Channel's most successful original movie and it's clear to see why. The movie had over 7 million viewers on its debut in 2006. The most in Disney Channel history until "The Cheetah Girls 2" premier later that year. It's huge! The songs, the choreography, be production value. I don't know how you can not be obsessed. "Breaking Free" is song at the climax of the movie when Zac Efron's and Vanessa Hudgens's characters, Troy and Gabriella, go against all odds and audition for their school musical. This was a big deal because they were stepping outside of their high school cliches and doing something different. It goes without saying that this movie, like every Disney Channel movie, is centered around following your heart no matter what. High School Music touch all hearts by turning a terrible period of life into a magical fantasy. And just in case the first movie wasn't sensational enough, they made two more!
4. "Cheetah Sisters"- The Cheetah Girls.
The Cheetah Girls in "The Cheetah Girls"
GiphyWe all were too young to understand how iconic The Cheetah Girls were. These ladies were serving us all kinds of feminist, Destiny's Child type talent. This 2003 masterpiece was actually produced by the Whitney Houston and is one of Disney Channel's most successful movie musicals. They pulled talent from everywhere: Raven-Symoné(a Disney veteran), Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams (former members of group 3LW), and Sabrina Bryan (actress and dancer). The Cheetah Girls honestly has a very weak storyline but they make up for it with their great music.
The group's sound was so above anything else Disney was putting out. They were giving us four part harmony R&B Influence."Cheetah Sisters" is the final song of the movie. The girls come together after an overly dramatic fall out to save a dog's life and sing about the power of friendship. It's super epic because in the movie, the girls deny a record deal and stay true to their hearts. Not to mention these matching outfits. It was a perfect way to end the movie and has us singing along 15 years later.
5. "The Climb"- Miley Cyrus.
Giphy"Hannah Montana" was yet another Disney Channel sensation. Miley Cyrus hit the scene with this show in 2006 and took over the entire world. The show was so huge, that when "Hannah Montana: The Movie" premiered in '09, it was placed in theaters. Whether it was as Miley or as Hannah we also got great music. "The Climb" is set at the very climax of the movie where Miley Stewart has decided to reveal to the world that she is pop superstar Hannah Montana. This event turns the universe on it's head.
The whole series has been leading up to this moment and no one knows what is going to happen next? Does this mean no more Hannah Montana? Does this mean Miley can't be a normal girl anymore? All these questions swirl in our head as Miley brings us to tears with this song about life and it's journey. "The Climb" was a success in and out of the Disney world. It was Miley's very first Country solo record and reach number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It's special because it was a stepping stone to Miley's future music career. It's also a beauty way of summing up the 6 year run Hannah Montana as a whole.
6. "Starstruck"- Sterling Knight.
Sterling Knight and Danielle Campbell in "Starstruck"
GiphyThought I'd toss this in here for giggles. Sterling Knight, mainly known for playing the awesome Chad Dylan Cooper in the equally awesome TV Show "Sonny With A Chance", did give us a terrible movie in his spare time. "Starstruck" premiered in 2010 during the height of Sterling's Disney fame. The movie follows Jessica Olson, (played by Danielle Campbell) who is a regular girl who just weirdly ends up meeting a Pop Superstar Christopher Wilde (player by Sterling). They end up really clicking because he's a huge star and just wants and authentic friendship and she's the only person in the world he doesn't buy into his fame. The whole movie is very unrealistic and cliche but we love it anyway. "Starstruck" is the title song of the movie and it's literally a huge spoiler. Christopher Wilde is singing about his fame and how that's all people see. Nevertheless, it's catchy and it's a reason for us all to look at Sterling, who we didn't know could sing. The movie did really well, despite not being Disney's best. The soundtrack even charted on the Billboard Hot 200.
7. "Some Call It Magic"- Raven Symoné.
Raven-Symoné in "Some Call It Magic"
GiphyIf Raven wasn't busy acting in every Disney Channel show ever, and appearing in every Disney Channel movie ever, she was dishing out a few songs here and there. "Some Call It Magic" was the lead single from "That's So Raven Too!", the second soundtrack album for the television show. Raven is arguably the biggest Disney star to ever exist. Her sitcom was just a small piece of everything she's been a part of. Either way, this song wins our hearts, keeping with the overall theme of the hit show "That's So Raven". Raven Baxter, is a regular teenage girl minding her own business, except for the small fact that she's kinda psychic and has visions of future events. Throughout the song, Raven sings about her gift and how although she can't explain it and things may get crazy, she's happy to be her. We love this song because we love Raven. Also because it reminds us to embrace the quirky parts of who we are. We may not all be psychics, but everyone is unique and you can only be happy when you learn to love what's different about you. "Some Call It Magic" is an homage to that and all the wonder of the unknown.
8. "Send It On"- Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and, The Jonas Brothers.
The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato in "Send It On"
GiphyOne reason I call 2006-2012 Disney's Gold Era is off they picked up a string of incredibly talented musicians during that time. The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato all hit the Disney scene roughly around the same time and all of them went on to big large names in music. Disney would have been stupid not to have gotten them all together for a song."Send It On" is an answered prayer. It's about being a positive example and spreading kindness. The song was written for the Disney's Friends For Change initiative. It was a promotional charity single to bring attention to the environment and raise money. It's the most Disney thing ever. What makes it great is they it maximizes the all the talent in the room. You got Nick and Kevin on the guitar. Miley, Selena, Demi, and Joe are singing their hearts out. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect childhood memory.
9. "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" -Disney Channel Circle Of Stars.
Disney Channel Circle Of Stars in "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes"
GiphyContinuing on with iconic Disney stars uniting for an awesome song. This was part II of the Disney Channel Circle of Stars coming together! This time, to sing the classic, "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" It's obvious we love this song because it's embedded in our hearts from "Cinderella." The Circle of Stars just gives us a brand new version to love. When I say everyone is a part, everyone is a part! I think this moment is super important for a bunch of reasons. Disney got all the starts together to show they're a family even across multiple shows. They showed the world all the talent they had at the time. They also reminded people that even the new age of Disney Channel was in touch with the classic Disney roots. We love our Disney Channel shows, but the animated movies will always be the heart. This version of "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" is fun, upbeat, but just as inspiring. The cast had a great time singing it, and we had a great time watching it.
10. "Beautiful Soul"- Jesse McCartney.
Jesse McCartney in "Beautiful Soul"
GiphyI wasn't going to include this song because technically it's not a Disney Channel original song. Jesse McCartney never had his own Disney show or movie, but he always seemed to be in the mix. "Beautiful Soul" was the lead single to his debut album of the same name. The song was all over Disney Channel; specifically in season one of "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" where he guest starred. Disney made sure Jesse showed of his awesome vocals on the show and got us hooked from there. "Beautiful Soul" also went on to peak at 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jesse stuck around Disney Channel much longer too. Guest starring on "Hannah Montana" and having songs featured in plenty of Disney Channel movies like: "Return To Halloween Town" and "Stuck In The Suburbs". Disney really made this guy a household name and whenever we look back on those days we can't help not thinking of him!
This is just ten of hundreds of songs that defined out childhood. Whenever I need to go back to simpler times, I dig these gems up! Do any of these hit home for you? What's your fave Disney nostalgia tune?
