Visiting a new place is always an exciting experience, especially if it's outside. With all the wonderful technology available now, travel information is easily accessible. For most locations, you can now find out directions, opening and closing times and prices all online.
Last weekend, a group of us decided we wanted to get out and explore-- we wanted a great place to hike, but nothing too strenuous. We wanted to find a place that wouldn't require us to stay overnight. Our destination ended up being Dismals Canyon in Phil Campbell, AL. From our town, it's only about a four hour drive (about the same for a day trip to Panama City). The drive is mostly interstate/highway, with miles of empty land on each side. Truly, I loved the ride there.
When you arrive at Dismals Canyon, you walk down a short trail to this adorable cabin with an amazing deck to check in. You fill out some basic information and pay, then you get your map and head out. The trail is basically a loop; you end that trail where you start the trail. The caves are gorgeous and sometimes frightening. The trees are incredibly high in the air, towering over all of the visitors. There is a creek that runs down the middle of the trail that you have to cross over a few times. You can either cross the creek using suspension bridges or on large concrete stepping stones.
Throughout the trail, they have signs with different names of your exact location written on them, such as, "The Kitchen" or "Fat Man's Misery" (which you are not supposed to go in but we did anyway). Even if you don't follow the map, it's easy to navigate throughout the canyon thanks to the trail markers and paths created over time.
While hiking, you will notice all the beautiful features that Dismals Canyon has to offer. You'll see the enormous boulders and towering trees, not to forget the beautiful deep green grass and moss. The waterfalls and creek add even more wonder to the magical beauty that is Dismals Canyon.
After you complete your journey, make sure to stop by the Country Store and visit the Soda Fountain and Grill. They have tasty foods and delicious malts, shakes and sundaes. Personally, I recommend the Slug Burger and a Dismals Mudslide.
I won't forget the memories I made or the sights I saw that day. I can't wait to go back.
