Last Saturday morning, when I had way too much to do, I decided to restart one of my favorite shows of all time, Gilmore Girls. I came in and out of the living room as I completed my tasks, watching the events unfold for a few minutes at a time before my next obligation summoned me.
After a while, I realized that, though I wasn't watching each episode from start to finish, I always had a pretty good idea of what was happening. Rory was doing school work, Lorelai was loving and hating Christopher, and Luke was pining after Lorelai. Sometimes Dean would show up and I would have to figure out why he was mad at Rory but other than that the plot seemed pretty consistent.
I came to the realization that I could almost always piece together what was happening, not because I remembered specific scenes from specific episodes, but because the show is boring. Yes, I said it, the show is boring. The plot is boring, yet, for some reason, we love it so dearly.
I still love this show to death, don’t get me wrong, I’m just stating some facts. I’ve had friends who’ve told me they tried to watch it and it wasn’t exciting enough for them, to which I would respond, “Oh, just wait until Jess comes. It gets crazy,” (which I now realize is a very false statement.)
The show is never crazy because it's not meant to be. The sole purpose of the plot is to portray the perfect life of a family whose life easily couldn't have been perfect, which prompts a bigger question: Why have we fallen so in love with Gilmore Girls?
The show is a perfect combination of fantasy and reality. It is everything we would want, a dream life, but it's a semi-attainable dream life. We can be as put together and studious as Rory if we really want to, but we can’t all go to Yale. Some of us can have great family relationships, but we can’t all have a mom like Lorelai Gilmore. The Stars Hollow lifestyle is so close yet so far, just out of our reach.
We're able to set aside the cheesy one-liners and overdramatic circumstances to be immersed in a perfect world, which honestly, isn't uncommon. Isn't that part of entertainment? Don't we love these fictional, contemporary worlds because it gives us the opportunity to live multiple lives?
So, yes, Gilmore Girls is boring, but that doesn't mean it's bad entertainment. In a strange way, we love it because it's boring, too perfect and too relatable all at the same time.
