A Discussion About "Thirteen Reasons Why"

A new Netflix TV series is taking us by storm. It's called "Thirteen Reasons Why." Without spoilers, I'll tell you the main plot just in case you haven't read the book or caught into the craze about the show. Hannah Baker is a high school student who commits suicide, but before she does she records 13 tapes, each tape is dedicated to a certain person and it describes what that person did to hurt Hannah or make her life as miserable as it was. The tapes started with the person on tape 1 and continued to be passed through the ranks. No one dares tell a soul, or their secrets would be let out and their lives potentially ruined. We follow Clay through as he listens, and then reacts, to each tape.

That's it. That's all I'll tell you. I'd hate to spoil anything. This article isn't about the show or the book, it's about the message. "Thirteen Reasons Why" shows us just how cruel people can be and what some students go through without their parents, friends, or school administrators ever truly knowing. It shows how alone a person can feel.

This is serious stuff guys.

What if something you said pushed a person over the brink? What if you were the one on the receiving end? I know a lot of you are probably thinking that this is no big deal, that people get their feelings hurt too easily. This may be true in some cases, but also consider this, what if they also leave school and go to an even worse home life? What if they are abused (physical, verbal, etc) at home and school is supposed to be their escape? You never truly know or understand what another person is going through, even if you think that you do.

If you're that person that feels all alone, you're not. I promise you that much. There is someone that cares about you, someone that would miss you if you were gone. There are so many resources out there if you need help. The National hotline number is 1-800-273-8255. You're not alone.

On another note, I've been seeing memes on social media poking fun at the show, like in the image seen below. First off, I don't think it's funny. The girl in the movie/show was seriously hurt, and while it may be fiction in this instance, it's real for some people. Depression and suicide are not things to make light of. Stop joking. It hurts.

Everyone has their own struggles, don't pretend to know what everyone else is going through and don't act like your struggles are worse than someone else's, it's degrading. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask for it. If you know that someone is struggling, reach out to them. Above all, just be nice.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
